How to make a transparent GIF
- Open an animated GIF up to 20 MB and 1,048,576 pixels per frame (width × height).

Which GIF backgrounds can you remove?
Clean cuts: one flat backdrop

Hard cases: gradients, shadows and hair
GIF stores transparency as a single transparent index, so there is no partial alpha and no soft edge. Hair, fur, glass and motion blur will keep a rim of the old backdrop. Lower the tolerance, or cut the subject out in an editor and re-export the frames.
Same-color overlap
If the subject contains the same color as the backdrop — a white shirt on a white wall — those pixels go too. Click a distant corner instead of a shadow, and keep the tolerance as low as the scene allows.
Transparent GIF or transparent PNG?
If the image does not move, a PNG or WebP keeps soft edges and looks better everywhere. Use GIF when you need a looping animation in a place that only supports GIFs, such as a chat sticker, forum avatar or email signature.

Why is there a white or light fringe around my transparent GIF?
Edge pixels in the original frame are a blend of subject and backdrop, and GIF transparency is on or off with no soft edge. Lower the tolerance so fewer blended pixels are removed, or trim a pixel in an editor first. A photo editor with subject selection feathers that edge better than any color key can.
Can I remove a GIF background that is not one solid color?
Not reliably. The tool clears pixels within the tolerance of the color you clicked, so gradients, cast shadows and two-tone backdrops leave patches behind. Increasing the tolerance removes a wider range of colors, including any similar colors in the subject.
What is the difference between a GIF background remover and a transparent GIF maker?
Search results use both names for the same job, and they usually mean one of two things. Either you erase the backdrop from an existing animation, which is what this page does, or you assemble a new GIF from frames that already carry transparency.
